Simultaneously, AI applications enable revolutionary breakthroughs in medicine and healthcare. AI technologies are viewed as new tools for mental health service planning and for identifying and monitoring mental health disorders at the individual and population levels. AI-based tools can utilize digitized healthcare data, including electronic medical records, images, and handwritten notes, to automate tasks, facilitate professionals' work, and explore the causes of complex illnesses.

The Regional Digital Health Plan for the WHO European Region for 2023-2030, presented in September 2022, also highlights the need for innovations in forecasting and analytics, using big data and AI in healthcare.

"We are seeing a growing application of AI in healthcare, and it is now crucial to assess the situation regarding the use of AI tools in mental health research to determine current trends, gaps, opportunities, and challenges," says Dr. David Novillo-Ortiz, the regional advisor for data and digital health at the WHO European Regional Office (ERO), one of the study's authors.

Challenges

The study, titled "Methodological and Quality-Related Shortcomings in the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health Research: A Systematic Review," conducted by experts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) and the ERO, focuses on the use of AI tools in mental health research from 2016 to 2021.

"We observed that AI-based tools are primarily used in research related to depressive disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders but are hardly utilized in other areas. This indicates significant gaps in our knowledge about how these tools can be applied to study other mental health disorders," says Dr. Ledia Lazeri, the regional mental health advisor at the WHO ERO.

AI opens up new possibilities for studying mental illnesses and developing more effective health protection strategies. However, the use of AI solutions often involves the use of complex statistical and mathematical tools and multidimensional data, leading to the possibility of errors and misinterpretation of results. Researchers sometimes tend to overly rely on AI. The study indicates significant shortcomings in how AI tools handle statistical data and the inadequate validation and assessment of data for possible errors.

Concerns are also raised about the insufficient transparency in reporting the use of AI models, limiting opportunities for result reproducibility. The study reveals that the data and models used are often not made publicly available, and researchers rarely collaborate with each other.

"Insufficient transparency and methodological errors are worrisome because they hinder the safe application of AI-based tools. Data engineering issues for AI models are often overlooked or misinterpreted, and there are noted deficiencies in data processing. These are serious problems that may indicate an overly hasty implementation of AI models without assessing their applicability in real conditions," notes Dr. Novillo-Ortiz.

"Artificial intelligence is the cornerstone of the digital revolution. This study gives us some insight into what awaits us in the coming years and the factors that need to be considered in further improving the structures and processes of healthcare systems concerning mental health protection," says Antonio Martinez-Millana, associate professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and one of the study's authors.

Individual findings from the study were presented at the WHO ERO-organized event titled "Application of Big Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Mental Health Protection," held on December 7, 2022. Participants, experts from European Region countries, discussed approaches to applying AI models to mental health service planning, as well as safety considerations and success factors, such as involving individuals with mental health disorders in model creation.
